Few handbags carry a history as resourceful as the Gucci Bamboo. Born in 1947 in post-war Florence, the design wasn't actually a stylistic choice, not at first anyway. With wartime rationing making traditional materials like leather and metal incredibly scarce, Guccio Gucci and his artisans turned to imported Japanese bamboo. By heating and bending the cane into a curved handle, they inadvertently created a luxury icon.
