Subtle yet Defining: Bottega Veneta Hop vs. Veneta

Subtle yet Defining: Bottega Veneta Hop vs. Veneta

When Bottega Veneta decided to discontinue the Veneta, their most popular and longest running model to date, I could almost hear the dismay on reddit and purseforum jumping out of the computer screen. At least we still got the preloved market. In its place, a new model was introduced - the Hop.

In the world of fashion and handbags, every detail can make a significant difference. Today, we delve into the key differences between two popular styles, the Bottega Veneta Hop and the Veneta, and explore whether the Hop can indeed replace the Veneta in the hearts of BV lovers.

Distinctive Design Features

1. Corners Matter:

The most noticeable difference between the Hop and the Veneta bag is the shape of their corners. The Hop boasts pointed corners, lending it a more defined and structured look. In contrast, the Veneta features rounded corners, offering a softer, more fluid appearance. This subtle variation in design has a big impact on its visuals. Think Hermès Kelly Retourne and Sellier. In both cases, the pointed corners render the bag a more formal look.

Its aesthetics aside, the Veneta is due for an update having been on the shelf for almost 30 years. The pointed shape, and the updated colour palette especially the fondant colour, certainly brings a fresh look and appeals to a younger generation of consumers. It was in one of videos posted by Nara Smith, that made me see that you can carry a Bottega Veneta in your 20s too.

In terms of size, the pointed corners adds at least 5cm to the width of a similar size Veneta, without increasing the capacity.

2. Strap Style:

Carrying comfort is often dictated by the style of the strap, however it seems to get worse with each iteration. The Hop sets itself apart with a wide and flat shoulder strap that includes an intrecciato weave underneath. On the other hand, the Veneta’s strap is characterised by a section of plain leather. On the 1st generation Veneta, the top section of the handle doesn't have intrecciato on top or underneath. On the 2nd generation Veneta, the handle has intrecciato only on the top side, and smooth leather underneath. And the 2nd-Gen handle is very thick.

The 1st gen strap is the most streamlined and comfortable option of them all, providing a more sleek look that complements its overall design.

3. Closure Mechanism:

The way a bag opens can significantly impact its usability. For the Hob, a magnetic flap opening system is employed. This design allows for quick and easy access to the contents of the bag. Alternatively, the Veneta adheres to a more traditional zip opener.

4. Sizing:

The Veneta being one of the longest running models of the house of Bottega Veneta, comes in various sizes ranging from 40cm to 55cm.

The Hop comes in three sizes: large, standard and mini.

      Handle drop: 27 cm | 10.6”
  • Standard:
    • Height 21 cm x Width 46cm x Depth 10cm | (8.2” x 18.1" x 3.9", 7.9")
      Handle drop: 20 cm | 7.9”
  • Mini:
    • Height 14.5 cm x Width 25.5cm x Depth 11 cm | (5.7” x 10" x 4.3", 3.9")
      Handle drop: 10 cm | 3.9”
      Strap drop: 58 cm | 22.8”

Both the Hob and the Veneta offer unique features that cater to different tastes and requirements. While the Hob provides pointed corners and a stylish intrecciato shoulder strap with an innovative magnetic closure, the Veneta stands out with its rounded corners and classic zip opening. Your choice between these two may ultimately depend on which attributes resonate more closely with your personal style and functional priorities. Whether you prefer the structured elegance of the Hob or the timeless simplicity of the Veneta, both bags represent iconic craftsmanship in their own right.
